Strawberry Scare Strikes

Australia has recently been hit with a strawberry scare after multiple cases were reported of needles been found in strawberries. Now I must admit, when I first heard of needles being inside strawberries I thought they were growing with the needle inside it. It was only when speaking with a friend about the issue that I realised, someone was in fact placing the needles within the strawberries. This realisation shocked me, who would be cruel enough to do such a thing? One of the first reported cases on September 11th is of a Queensland man who had to be taken to the emergency room due to stomach pains. The man, who states he bought a punnet from Woolworths, was with a friend when he bit into a strawberry only realise there was a needle inside of it. Not only is the issue harming consumers, it is also causing major damage to the brands and farms that sell and provide the strawberries. The contamination of strawberries now seems to be impacting 6 brands and 4 states in Australia. Many strawberry growers are laying the blame on the Australian Government for creating hysteria around the strawberry crisis - leading to a massive decrease in strawberry sales. As a nation, I think we need to support farmers by continuing to purchase strawberries. Yes - there is a possibility there might a needle inside it - but what harm can that cause if you cut the strawberry in half before eating it?

China has recently been accused of locking up hundreds of muslims in its Western region of Xinjiang. Satellite pictures from July 12 2015 show Dabancheng, in China’s west, to be a patch of empty, untouched desert. Ghana Caging Mental Health Patients

Today, the 10th of October is International Mental Health Day. Over the past few years, the increased awareness of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety have positively affected many people. A recent report from 2018 showed that male suicide has dropped to its lowest level in 30 years. Whilst the suicide rates for first world countries have lowered, many third world countries can’t say the same. Low income countries spend on average just 0.5% of their health budgets on mental health, according to the World Health Organisation. In Africa, Ghana has only one psychiatrist per 1.2 million people. This lack of mental health support means many people turn to ‘prayer camps’. These are camps that use ‘traditional healing methods’ to assist patients. However, these camps have been shown to use chains to restrain their residents despite government ban.
